Moments Make the Difference

You have likely heard something like “minutes matter” or “every second counts.” You often time hear that phrase when it comes to times of crisis. Whether it is the time it takes to respond to a fire, the time between a major medical event and you arriving at the hospital, or the time it takes to respond to a shooting at an office or school. Most of those scenarios we hope we are never in, but we are taught that every minute...maybe even every second counts.

And just as a few moments matter in crisis, and it only takes a few moments for something to devolve into a crisis, it also only takes a few moments to completely change someone’s day for the good. There are several things that you can do in a short period of time that makes a huge difference. Think about some things that have been said to you or done for you that have completely changed your demeanor: a hug, a kind word, a thoughtful gift, a sacrificial act, or just a few moments spending time together with someone you love.

How long does it take to say the following phrases?

“I love you.”

“I’m sorry!”

“I’m so proud of you!”

“You mean the world to me.”

“I have no doubt that you can do it!”

It only takes a moment to say words that could make the difference in a good day and a bad day for someone else. Yet, what we often fail to realize is that phrases like those and consistent expression of love like those mentioned above don’t just impact for a day. Many of those moments will be remembered for a lifetime.

So challenge yourself every day to express love and appreciation to the people around you. It only takes a moment to make an impact. We are only given so many moments in life and every moment makes a difference. Listen to what God’s word says about the power of words:

“Kind words are like honey--sweet to the soul and healthy for the body” (Proverbs 16:24).

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad” (Proverbs 12:25).

Go out and make a difference this week...one moment at a time.
